Where to swim and enjoy the sea in the bay
It's often forgotten: just minutes from Mont Saint-Michel begin real sandy beaches, backed by the cliffs and dunes of the Manche coast. One warning though — you don't swim at the foot of the Mont itself: the tides here are the strongest in Europe and the sandbanks are dangerous. Here are the safe, enjoyable beaches less than an hour from Servon.
20 minutes from Servon, the Bec d'Andaine beach at Genêts offers the finest view of Mont Saint-Michel with your feet in the sand. It's also the departure point for guided bay crossings. A vast expanse at low tide, perfect for a walk or picnic facing the Mont. Swimming is possible at high tide, staying close to shore.

Nicknamed 'the little Nice of the Manche', Saint-Jean-le-Thomas has a lifeguarded sandy beach in summer, a seafront promenade and a superb view over the bay. Neighbouring Dragey-Ronthon, wilder, is loved by horse riders — the trotting horses training on the beach at sunrise are worth the trip. 25 minutes from Servon.

Heading north, Jullouville and Carolles unroll long fine-sand beaches lined with Belle Époque villas, perfect for family swimming. Granville, 40 minutes away, combines beach, harbour, casino and the walled Upper Town. The Champeaux cliffs between Carolles and Jullouville offer the finest panorama over the bay — Victor Hugo called it 'the most beautiful bay in Europe'.

40–45 minutes away, the Breton coast changes the scenery: rocky coves and emerald water. Port-Mer and Port-Pican in Cancale are perfect for a swim followed by oysters on the harbour. Saint-Malo lines up its great Sillon and Bon-Secours beaches, with a seawater pool at the foot of the ramparts.

Never venture alone on foot into the bay of Mont Saint-Michel: the tide comes in 'at the speed of a galloping horse' and the quicksand is real. To walk in the bay, always go with a certified guide. For swimming, choose lifeguarded beaches in summer (Saint-Jean-le-Thomas, Jullouville, Granville, Saint-Malo) and check tide times before setting out.
